Guns don't kill people..people kill people.

For those of you who know my husband, you are familiar with his hobbies. He is an avid hunter/ fisherman and loves anything outdoors. His dad is also the same and taught my husband at a very young age to use a gun.
I come from a city folk family. My dad taught me how to check the oil in my car and that anything needing done beyond that was the duty of a licensed mechanic. We never had guns. I never even saw one for real until I was 18 and went to live with my grandmother in Georgia for a few months. A 22. to be exact, and we shot at the trees, nothing live!
So for me the thought of The man buying The boy a 5 year old birthday present of his very own shotgun somewhat frightens me. ( he origninally wanted to get one when he turned 2..uhhh, what would be the point of that?) I realize its mostly from my lack of gun handling knowledge or experience. I know my husband is a very responsible hunter and would teach The boy everything he ever needed to know to be safe. But still....
I should probably count myself lucky that The boy is currently scared to death of any very loud, sudden noises, like fireworks, or ballons popping..or gun shots. So it really hasn't been much of an issue. He is getting more warmed up to the idea of going hunting with his dad however and I have a feeling that soon, he will be going on his first trip. I want them to have that bonding experience and for he and The man to have a hobbie to do together to keep them close, I just wonder why it couldn't be bowling?

here is a really cute little redneck boy hangin out with his dad dove hunting. I can just see this happening to my little boy, and though I would laugh..it still hurts! ;-) ( though the man assures me there are guns for little kids that don't have a kickback....I think he makes stuff up to keep me apeased.)

  1. OH MY GOODNESS! I am so glad that I am NOT in your circumstances! Luke wants to get a gun for the home and I about freaked! Although, I have recently warmed to the idea, especially since you never know who will try to break into your home!

  2. Boys and their guns. We have a very large rifle in our closet. I don't know if it will ever be fired but it is nice to know it is there when Randy's not. We havn't started talking about the boys and guns yet but I'm sure we will next season. Have fun.

Luckily dh is also a city boy and won't be having this discussion.

By the way, you do know that the whole expression is, "guns don't kill people, people kill people...with guns." ;)
